Abstract
The increase in interest in the movement of the top layer of water masses, especially offshore, has led to the realization that there is a gap in presently available measurement techniques. The equipment described has been designed to track transponder buoys from a central base station at distances up to 60km. By using simple design the cost of the buoy transponder has been minimized. Simple changes to the base station allow either range-bearing or range-range tracking to be used.
