Abstract :
As a result of WiFi explosion, interworking between the cellular system and WLAN is drawing much attention. In pervious studies the dual mode gateways (GWs) are assumed while ignoring the increased power consumption to serve both networks. This results in serious energy challenge when battery-charged mobile terminals act as GWs in future ubiquitous environment. To address this issue, we propose a GW access scheme coordinated by enhanced base station (EBS) for the integrated WCDAM/WLAN. On basis of the coordination function resided at EBS, the timing between GW awaking and ubi nodes´ request transmission in WLAN can be synchronized. GWs are hence free from power-on their dual interfaces and decrease the power consumption on unnecessary sensing WLAN. On the other hand, we emphasize the feasibility of the proposal by enhancing the BS rather than ubi nodes which makes more sense to operators. The performance is evaluated via computer simulation given varied node density and transmission cycle of Sync. signals. The results present effective power reduction on WLAN interfaces at GWs with easy applicability to current systems
