Abstract :
A preliminary investigation is presented into some ideas concerning GaAs preamplifier designs for optical communication systems. After a brief review of existing preamplifier designs a recently published transimpedance amplifier design is modified in order to enhance performance using cascoding techniques and the introduction of a current mirror in the forward path of the feedback system. Finally, the alternative approach of a common-gate amplifier which avoids feedback is explored with a view to future novel architectures based on current amplification
