Abstract :
The evaluation of Web-based learning system has been one of the most talked about issue over the recent years. New Horizon College English (NHCE), as one of the most popular Web-based English learning system in Universities, also needs to be evaluated on a broader concept. NHCE system (second edition in 2008) was briefly introduced in this paper first. A review of the literature enabled to generate 10 items that were mainly grouped into five parts: communication, quiz depot, online classroom, learning tools and overall expectation. The reliability of the questionnaire was first tested by partial least square (PLS). Next, the students completed the ten-item questionnaire. Then summative evaluation was carried out on Web-based English system NHCE with analysis of PLS. At the same time, performance evaluation was conducted, namely, students´ performance online and in the final exam were compared and analyzed to evaluate effectiveness of NHCE with T-test and F-test. Problems existing in the system were also examined and suggestions were proposed in this paper.
