Abstract :
The use of fibre optic links (FOLs) in Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) testing has a number of advantages over conventional coaxial transmission systems. The benefits of optical fibre include immunity to electromagnetic radiation, the non-intrusive nature of fibre upon the electric field under measurement, and reduced size and weight of the cross-site cables. However the requirements of wide analogue bandwidth (>1 GHz), high dynamic range (>45 dB), good gain stability over a wide temperature range, and battery supply operation are all extremely demanding. This paper discusses the specifications, design and performance of a rugged FOL system specifically designed for use in EMC and EMP testing. Design details are given and results of system performance are presented
