Abstract
Piezoelectric composites of the 0-3 type were considered as alternatives to thick-film polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for application in the development of large-area hydrophones. Small hydrophone arrays were fabricated and their acoustical performance was determined. In addition to a constant free-field voltage sensitivity over a broad frequency range, a near-zero level of acoustic contamination due to interelement coupling was also demonstrated, as indicated by the measured directivity patterns and relative phase responses. The test results are compared with those of similar PVDF arrays, and the merit of material selection is discussed
