Abstract
The importance of multiplexers and controller costs on the final area and speed of synthesized designs is demonstrated. In order to produce optimal results, these factors cannot be ignored. In addition, the authors demonstrate the tradeoff of single- versus multi-function ALUs on synthesis results. Including these factors during synthesis yields results which are both smaller and faster than those produced without them. The behavioral synthesis system has been modified to include these factors
