Abstract :
The broadband rectangular microstrip antenna is realized by using thicker substrate in conjunction with the proximity feeding technique. The proximity feeding technique realizes broader BW for substrate thickness greater than 0.06λ0. Further increase in the bandwidth is realized either by using multi-resonator gap-coupled configurations or by cutting the slots inside the patch along with the proximity feed. In this paper, a broadband proximity fed rectangular microstrip antenna is discussed. A broadband gap-coupled configuration of proximity fed rectangular microstrip antenna is proposed. It gives a bandwidth of more than 350 MHz with gain of more than 8 dBi. Further increase in the bandwidth of this configuration is realized by first cutting the rectangular slots on the radiating edges of parasitic rectangular patch which is gap-coupled along the non-radiating edges of the proximity fed rectangular patch. This gives a bandwidth of 490 MHz with broadside radiation pattern and gain of more than 9 dBi. Further the rectangular slot is cut on the non-radiating edges of all the rectangular patches which were coupled to the proximity fed antenna. This configuration gives a bandwidth of more than 500 MHz with better radiation pattern and gain characteristics as compared to the previous configuration.
