The Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) system is extremely sensitive to a difference in temperature between surface seawater and deep seawater. When the surface seawater temperature drops only

C, the generator terminal output is reduced by 50%. To minimize this reduced output, sliding pressure operation is effective. Setting the optimum evaporating pressure according to the surface seawater operating temperature allows the annual power output to be several times greater than constant pressure operation. Theoretical analysis of the optimum evaporating pressure for a given change in surface seawater temperature has been conducted. The results of this theoretical analysis agreed with the experiment using the 100kW OTEC pilot plant in Nauru.
