Technical developments in metering in the United Kingdom

The authors describe the development work for the power system metering and radio teleswitch (MART) demonstration project. The background and reasons for both the two element meter concept and the experimental tariffs to be used are given. An outline of the specification for the MART device is presented, and its operation explained. Timescales for implementation are discussed. The development of prepayment meters operated by `tokens´ as a replacement for coin operated meters is also described
