Abstract :
Fishing is a complex activity with many forces affecting the usefulness of the application of modern technology. One hundred years ago the U.S. Fish Commission started a broad based program to support the fishing industry through science and technology. Today the Federal program depends more on technology transfer activities than basic research, the technology all too often coming from foreign nations. However, each problem area in fisheries usually has a complete set of conditions requiring mere than a simple transfer of existing technology. For the American fishing industry to further develop, a new comprehensive perspective is required over the simpleminded approach that assumes, a priori, that it´s just a matter of technology transfer.
