Abstract
Advanced applications for vehicle crew support or for autonomous operation require compact and inexpensive knowledge based systems (KBS) to be integrated with other vehicle systems and to operate in real time. The paper highlights some of the important issues affecting progress towards the use of real-time KBS in road vehicles. A short discussion of the potential advantages and applications is followed by a review of the underlying technology and research issues. Some practical aspects of implementation are then considered and contributed towards a view of the future
