  • Abstract
Provides an insight into some of the current applications of speech technology in the industrial sector. Some specific examples from the authors own experience are discussed in detail. The scope of speech technology as a tool for human computer interaction is widely acknowledged. However, it is comparatively recently that the reliability and cost of such systems has reached a level where this technology can be considered for applications outside the laboratory, in particular in the hostile environment of the industrial shop-floor. It is the aim of this paper to describe the currently perceived limitations of the technology for this type of application, and further to describe two applications where the technology is being used in anger
