Abstract
Examples of observatory and survey missions (Exosat, Hipparcos) have been examined. It is emphasized that onboard software plays a critical role in optimising mission results. Experience shows that adequate ground emulation facilities are needed to permit post-launch modification of onboard software. The need for an adequate ground infrastructure will be even more important when the sophisticated Columbus missions begin
