A case study on steam and power usage in paper making

The author describes the construction of composite heating and cooling curves for the paper drying process. Based upon an examination of these curves, practical heat recovery projects are developed to systematically reduce the heating demand by 20%. An existing CHP scheme is examined for optimality in relation to the overall system `pinch´ and more appropriate alternatives are developed to further reduce the mill´s energy costs. Final savings amount to 30% of the total site energy bill at an average payback of 2.5 years
