Abstract
Of the total amount of electricity consumed in 1985, just over 100000 GWh related to industrial and transport undertakings. Of this total some two thirds was consumed in nearly 10 million electric motor and drive systems. There is therefore a large consumption which carries with it large potential for saving. Basically there are three types of energy efficient drives: fixed speed energy saving motor controllers; high efficiency motors; and variable speed AC and DC drives. The author briefly describes these technologies. He then goes on to describe variable speed drives in more detail including actual applications in industry
