The history of the development of power management systems is outlined, and their gradual acceptance in marine systems, initially for back-up and subsequently for other purposes, is described. The systems developed into total energy management systems, and would commonly include most or all of status monitoring, equipment condition monitoring, automatic load shedding, load evaluation and prediction, separate operation of system subsections, and electrical protection settings
