            Abstract :
The author presents a baseband data modem deploying a V32-like structure to improve the bit-error-rate (BER) performance. Conventionally, baseband data modems use line or block codes (e.g. alternate mark inversion (AMI), 4B3T, etc.) based on partial response coding techniques. Here, a variation of the CCITT V32 recommendation which uses quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) together with trellis-coded modulation (TCM) with 64 carrier states is used. This combination provides an error-free transmission of approximately 3 km more than that of the conventional technique previously used
