Abstract :
Philips Electronics is involved in the development and manufacture of a diverse range of products such as colour televisions, electronic components, scientific instruments, medical systems, and defence systems. Software is a key component of most of their products and has assumed greater importance in manufacturing processes. The author describes the design and results of a coherent training programme in software engineering at Philips. Training is aimed at 4 populations: professional software engineers (primary skill training); hardware engineers (secondary skill training); managers who need orientating in the subject; and senior managers who need an appreciation
