Abstract :
The authors show an application of a solid state static VAR compensator (SSSVC) to modulate the reactive power requirement in the system by controlling the voltage profile of the network. A centralized power system stabilizer application using the SSSVC is presented. The mathematical model for a multimachine system is established to clearly see the effectiveness of the concept. The location of the controller is decided based upon the eigenvalues obtained from the linearized model of the unregulated system. It is demonstrated that the steady state stability of a power system can be improved by effective modulation of the reactive power in the system. Voltages and power flows are locally measured at the SSSVC location and conditioned for proper utilization as control signals for the SSSVC to improve the damping of interties
