Abstract
The results of a detailed finite element analysis are presented for the HMF marine riser connector, a bolted connector featuring an eliptical flange. Loading parameters are based on the record breaking water depth of the Wilmington Canyon Drilling Project off the East Coast. The application of a large finite element program with comprehensive substructuring capabilities (COSMIC/NASTRAN) along with a modern, color graphics oriented pre- and post-processor for finite element programs (PATRAN) to the analysis of a complex, three-dimensional solid model is illustrated. Color-coded stress contours, mapped onto hidden line plots of the finite element model, are shown for both the bolt-up and the hang-off conditions. In addition, the results are used for a limit analysis of the connector in the hang-off condition.
