Abstract :
The increase in boating activities in worldwide coastal areas has placed a severe burden on existing marina facilities. Many of these facilities were built several years ago and are unable to adequately accommodate the vessels currently being marketed. Therefore, new facilities must be created and old ones retrofitted. This paper addresses the engineering design criteria necessary to accomplish this. Also, discussed is the impact on and participation of all parties involved as viewed from an engineering aspect. In this respect an engineer´s responsibility is to the environment, the marina owner, user, operator, and the community in which the facilities exist.
