Abstract
Satellite (NOAA-7) multi-channel sea surface temperature charts are prepared at weekly intervals with a spatial resolution of 50 km in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific between October 1981 and November 1983. The start and end of the 1982- 1983 El Nino event is evident in sea surface temperature time series at the equator. Westward propagating equatorial long waves appear during 1981 and 1983, but are absent during 1982. During 1983 there is a pronounced westward penetration of the long waves to longitude 160W while in 1981 the waves are confined to longitude 130W.
