Abstract :
In addressing the problem of obtaining the static response of cable systems, it is noted that most existing methods suffer from a lack of generality in coping with boundary conditions. Consequently a technique is described permitting greater choice in this regard. Initially the coupled non-linear differential cable equilibrium equations are quasi-linearized using a Taylor´s expansion. This effectively decomposes the system into a set of initial value problems. The complete solution is obtained by re-combining multiples of each initial value solution so as to satisfy the original boundary conditions of the system. In simulating the dynamic response of a moored system, the important non-linear surge equation of motion is independently developed. Solutions are obtained using an approximate method and a time stepping numerical integration procedure.
