Title :
Revision of the Department of Transport specification MCG 0500-type approval of equipment and systems for the control of vehicle and pedestrian traffic on roads other than motorways
Author_Institution :
Traffic Control & Commun. Div., Dept. of Transp., London, UK
Abstract :
Traffic signal equipment and systems in the UK must be of a type approved by the Secretary of State for Transport. The procedures by which type approval may be sought are set out in the Department´s specification MCG 0500. These procedures were last reviewed in the early 1970s. The paper concerns a review of the procedures aimed at meeting the needs to allow and encourage more innovation by industry; to reduce the risk of unsatisfactory equipment being marketed; to take account of maintenance of equipment by parties other than the original manufacturers; and to ensure that all parties involved have a clear understanding of the type approval and its meaning
