After discussing the complexity of activated sludge system, its biological mechanism, and characteristics of traditional activated sludge method, the paper established a cellular automata model for traditional activated sludge processes, and then made simulations with practical parameters. The results indicate that the model well represents the evolvement of microbe in one upright section through configurations, and well describes the removal of substrate and the growth of activated sludge. The model realizes visualization of wastewater treatment in the bioreactor and visually depicts some characteristics of complex systems. Finally, the advantages of this model were analyzed.
