    The author reviews the commercial and strategic issues that are emerging emerging from users´ practical experience of electronic data interchange (EDI) and X.400 message handling services. The concept of public X.400 services providing a delivery service for EDI is examined, and the author assesses users´ requirements for EDI, and considers the extent to which they are met by public X.400 message handling services
