Abstract
For homogeneous elastic media with plane surfaces, criteria for the existence and uniqueness of Rayleigh-type free surface waves are known. We redevelop these results in a straightforward and simple way. The basic idea is to factorize a second order one-dimensional differential system for the polarization of a surface wave into a product of first order systems.
