Abstract
While many still view Latin America as a third world region that is lacking the necessary infrastructure and technical prowess in order to sustain long-term investment in complex satellite communications technology, a brief historical review reveals that this is far from the truth. As a result of over a half-century of experimentation and development in rocketry and satellite technologies, Latin America, in only a few decades, has been able to implement a number of sophisticated applications. Favorable political conditions, combined with a renewed interest in investing in technologies that traditionally have been seen as high-risk, promise a host of new opportunities for both consumers and industry players in the Latin America satellite telecommunications market.
