Abstract
The author draws on experience as a research student working on radio wave propagation theory, as a government scientist working on antennas for aircraft, as a lecturer in electronic engineering, and most recently as an industrial engineer running an antenna group. A balance is needed between mathematical theory and real life applications. There are three (at least) ways of aiding understanding of the mathematical formulations. These are: physical explanations; real life examples; and practical demonstrations. These three ideas are addressed
