  • Abstract
A connection between the problem of natural language understanding and representation of knowledge is outlined. An example is considered, of finding a substitute for a hammer, indicating the problems that this creates in representing the required knowledge. A solution is suggested which combines the needs of the expressiveness of the representation with those of the underlying reasoning techniques
