Abstract
ES2 set out to build a CAD database for storing VLSI design information. At the front end, the emergence of CGI and X-Windows proved invaluable. At the back end, the only real contender for representing design information was EDIF. EDIF is a text based interchange language and is not a very good medium for accessing design data quickly. So ES2 defined a database schema that borrowed the terminology and much of the semantics of EDIF. This schema is divided into two levels. The first covers the information contained within each view type and is very close to that provided by EDIF. The second builds on the EDIF storage classifications of cells, libraries and technology blocks to provide a more dynamic design environment
