Abstract
For time-invariant systems with long dead time, an improved controller has been designed. Only one parameter needs to be set to overcome the effect of long time delay. A dead-time compensator has also been designed to overcome the effects of time delay and time-varying parameters. The dead-time compensator is constructed using a state observer and a PD controller. The state observer consists of four first-order systems with small time constants; the output of each first-order system is used to design a controller for the time-varying system with long dead time. Simulation examples and engineering applications have proved that the new control methods can improve the control quality and performance of control systems with long dead time.
