Abstract :
Demonstrates how the current network can evolve into a future network by adding functionality to the existing network. Many types of networks and network nodes may be generated by addition of elements to the existing network nodes. In examining how the PSTN (Public Switched Telephony Network) can evolve into part of the IBCN (Integrated Broadband Communications Network), it is first necessary to understand both the PSTN, and the proposed IBCN. Permitting the present network to evolve will place many constraints, and these may actually restrict the options for the new network. The requirement for evolution must be considered seriously, for if the new network can not be installed in an evolutionary manner, it can only be used for totally new services
