Abstract :
India is used as an example of the recognition on the part of developing nations that computer networks allowing the exchange of information are essential for progress. An outline is presented of the different users and their requirements. The aspects governing the network infrastructure are examined. The network configuration options for intracity and intercity information exchange are described. Emphasis is placed on packet switched networks. Equipment availability status is discussed. Examples of operational data networks at the national level in India and details of the work being done in the area of information security are also presented
