Abstract
An expert system is described which is used to isolate a faulty device on a wide-area communications network. When a complaint is lodged by a user or maintenance crew that a certain device, e.g. a printer, cannot be reached from a controller (a mainframe), then either that device is out of order or the fault lies with one of the numerous devices which connect the device to the controller. The original expert system has been successfully re-implemented using the viewpoint mechanism of ART. Putting the individual tests in their own viewpoints has enabled the loopback test to be modeled explicitly
