Rural distribution system automation

The authors review current practice with the application of automatic sectionalising systems on distribution networks and consider recent developments in new pole top equipment to facilitate the extension of these systems. Some specification refinements are also considered. They describe three technically feasible methods of achieving automation of overhead high voltage distribution circuits. They detail a trial scheme encompassing all three operating modes where the hardware and automation philosophies will be tested and further developed. They also briefly consider some of the economic implications and application of automation to the distribution system
