Abstract :
Summary form only given. Summary form only given. We constructed models of three real metropolitan local exchange carrier (LEG) LATA networks in the year 2000, and used these models, together with various cost and demand scenarios, to ascertain the relative economics of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) as compared to other high-speed transport techniques. The intent here was to understand the worth of eight-wavelength ring and point-to-point WDM networking to save fiber material and amplifiers; savings due to exhaust situations were less important. In all cases, savings result from comparison to normal OC-48 SONET costs.
