Abstract
An explanation is presented of the dynamic instability that afflicts present-day power systems. Tensor analysis is used to compute the components of torque generated in various windings and the controller of a synchronous generator. The identification of the source of the instability is utilized to design a stabilizer which ensures stable operation at all operating conditions
