Abstract
An analysis is made of the split gate discriminator (SGD) used in radar range tracking and it is shown that when the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is poor, an SGD operating at the output of a square-law envelope detector can give a large error. The authors propose an adaptive noise subtraction technique to improve the performance of SGD for low SNRs. Simulation results are presented in support of the theory
