Abstract
A discussion is presented of the drawbacks in the conventional method of specifying an ASIC (application specific integrated circuit). A procedure is presented in which a dedicated functional simulator serves as an active tool for laying down the preliminary, evolutionary and final specification of the ASIC. The role of the dedicated functional simulator in the subsequent ASIC design activities and its possible role in the system modeling are also indicated
