Citizen Science is a form of research collaboration involving public participants in scientific research projects to solve real-world problems. With the sweeping progress of Web 2.0 technologies and capabilities, the availability of large scientific data sets through the Internet has allowed citizen science projects to engage volunteers in new ways. We believe that information field scholars have a unique position to make significant contributions to this emerging research area. This paper firstly seeks to present the origin and development of citizen science, and pinpoint its conceptualization. Furthermore, the paper identifies several important research directions for information management scholars from four perspectives that remain unaddressed and warrant further study. The research contributes to the Information field and provides insights for iSchool scholars to better understand various issues in citizen science.
