Abstract :
The reasons for computerization in banking are discussed, emphasizing the computerization of banking activities in India. The manner in which information technology enables banks to contain working and administrative overheads, widen the scope of services and improve the quality of decisions and the work environment is examined. It is indicated why failure to adopt this technology in banking may affect the marginal competitive position being held by the developing countries in service sectors. The problems arising out of implementation of the technology regarding their social, political and financial implications are categorized. A critical review is made regarding the impact of computing on employment from different perspectives. The possible impact of computing on management and organization is evaluated. A review is presented of the rationalistic approach which is used to explain the impact of computing and the political motives behind systems development
