Abstract :
The author identifies factors which contribute to a high peak-to-mean ratio in ATM video. This ratio needs to be high if the full benefit of the B-ISDN scheme is to be utilised. If the network is sufficiently and correctly loaded, a high peak-to mean ratio will result in a large statistical multiplexing gain. The motion of the scene, if interframe coding is being used, contributes to the bit-rate variations. Object textures and high-frequency uncorrelated picture material also make a contribution. The variations are dependent on the data compression properties of the coding scheme in operation
