Abstract :
The author discusses the harmonization of B-ISDN, the OSI Reference Model and the emerging multimedia end user service requirements. The key communication requirements of distributed multimedia computing are presented. A short summary of advances in the specification of the B-ISDN/AAL (ATM adaptation layer) services and protocols is used as the basis for mapping of the requirements to the AAL services
