Multimedia communication

Based on the RACE project MCPR (Multimedia Communication Processing and Representation) Alcatel SEL has realized a multimedia terminal system to be connected to Alcatel´s broadband ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) switch with a user access rate of 150 Mbit/s. The multimedia terminal adaptor approach was chosen to enable the MCPR system to be connected also to various experimental ATM environments. This working platform is used for evaluation and stepwise refinement of user and network relevant functionalities. The authors discuss the architectural implementation and communication aspects relevant to terminal design and describe the configuration and experience of a demonstration given during Telecom ´91 at the Geneva fair
