Abstract
A technique for synthesizing the null in the sidelobe region of an arbitrarily-shaped antenna pattern has been developed, with the null formed by perturbing the phases of 2 or 3 elements or subarrays of an array or subzones of a continuous aperture. By combining the principle of this technique with a suitable numerical minimization algorithm, it has been shown that it is possible to adaptively form a null in the direction of an interfering source, with relatively rapid and robust convergence. This adaptive algorithm requires no a priori knowledge of either the location of the interfering source or the antenna beam shape, and should be applicable to a wide class of antennas including phased arrays and reconfigurable mesh reflector antennas
