Abstract :
The development of an environmental monitoring system for underground mines in which optical fiber is used as the medium of transmission of data from sixteen underground sensors at different galleries to the surface stations is described. Both analog and Manchester coded digital signals are handled depending on the system complexities and expansion needs. For acquisition and display of data along with the generation of signals for high and low alarm, simple hardwared logic is used, whereas for maintaining a database in an integrated mine, a microprocessor-based system is proposed. The system has been tested on a INTEL 8085-based microprocessor consisting of 4K RAM memory and 8355 I/O ports for interfacing. Graded index multimedia optical fiber with 50 mu m core and 125 mu m fiber diameter operating at 825 nm is used.<>
