Abstract :
A novel design for a dedicated-function multiprocessor-based impedance relay is presented. The designated processor is an INTEL MCS-96 16 bit microcontroller. The general hardware architecture of a three-level operation with 5 microcontrollers is introduced. Specifications and performance of each group of microcontrollers, as well as of each level, are discussed. Test results of the rely at various operating conditions are demonstrated. After a fault inception, the relay is able to issue trip signals to the corresponding circuit breakers within 20 ms. The proposed relay offers speed, flexibility, and economy. Potential applications of the proposed relay in an industrial environment include cogeneration or any type of self-generating plants. In such applications the relay is used for network feeder as well as loss-of-field protection.<>
