Abstract
The traditional approaches to earthing system design are proving inadequate due to increased constraints, including: increases in system capacity and complexity, the use of microprocessor based equipment in substations, increased interaction with industrial installations (e.g. mines, pipelines and telecommunications networks), reduced substation areas, professional liability and tighter financial constraints. A guide presenting design principles and guidelines, as well as implementation and testing methodologies for earthing systems in Australian conditions, is in the final stages of preparation. The authors provide a description of the integrated design package, introduces a coordinated design methodology, and the technical background to the computational techniques and design methods used in the guide and associated software
